Glaucoma awareness week – story of a patient

No, this is not an example of a bad photo, but a sight of a glaucoma patient with an advanced disease.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause progressive damage of the optic nerve at the point where it leaves the eye to carry visual information to the brain.

Eleven years ago, Mr Drago Radeta suddenly saw small worm- and amoeba-like forms dancing in front of his eyes. Despite the fact that nobody seemed to be really concerned about it, he decided to visit an ophthalmologist. He was shocked when he was diagnosed as a glaucoma patient with irreversibly 30% reduced vision on one eye.

"If there were any preventive check-ups at the ophthalmologist’s so they could find out on time that I have high pressure, many things could have been prevented, so I would not be here where I am now," Mr Radeta told us.

Today glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, next to cataract. Everyone is at risk, from babies to senior citizens. Some call it a silent thief of sight. Don’t wait –regularly visit an ophthalmologist, says Mr Radeta.
